Growth

Bangalore Water Supply System is more than 100 years Old. First filtered water supply scheme from Hesarghatta was commissioned during August 1896 and since then water supply has been expanded to meet the growing needs of the city. After development  of Arkavathy Scheme between 1933 and 1964 in stages BWSSB successfully executed and commissioned Cauvery Schemes Stage – I,II,III and Stage IV Phase I. With this the city’s present drinking water supply is just over 860 million liters per day (MLD).
Out of the current 860 MLD water supply to the city a lion’s share of 95% water is provided by the Cauvery River Water Supply Scheme Stages I to IV. Keeping in view the growth of the city, Bangalore Water Supply Sewerage Board commissioned the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage-IV Phase-I during the year 2002 to fulfill the needs of water supply and sewerage facilities within and in peripheral area of the city.Bangalore city is situated at an elevation of about 350 meters with respect to source of water supply (Cauvery River), and also 98 Kms away; as such it is necessary to provide three stages pumping to convey water to the city.Expansion of water supply and sewerage infrastructure to meet the growing needs of Bangalore city is extremely important to comply with the urban drinking water and sanitation policy of the state and to bridge the gap between demand & supply.

The population of Bangalore metropolitan area consisting of core area and surrounding seven City Municipal Councils, and one Town Municipal Council and other areas is expected to grow from present 6 Million to 7.3 Million by 2011, as per the Revised Comprehensive Development plan of BDA. The per – capita supply is expected to slide, if further augmentation is not taken up now and commissioned.

Therefore to meet the growing demand for water supply and sanitary facilities to the city and other areas as above, Cauvery water Supply scheme stage IV phase II is being taken up to augment an additional 500 MLD of water to the city.
